Loggerhead Sea Turtles are Disappearing Across the globe, populations of loggerhead sea turtles struggle to survive among pressures from fisheries, pollution, and impacts to nesting beaches. The Sea Turtle Restoration Project needs your help right now to ensure loggerheads are uplisted from threatened to endangered status, which will give them more protections. Proposed "Uplist" of Loggerheads to Endangered Status In response to STRP petitions, a proposal to change the loggerhead's status from threatened to endangered has just been released. More pressure is needed to stop the National Marine Fisheries Service's actions to jeopardize loggerheads in the Hawaii and Gulf of Mexico longline fisheries, and to speed-up creation of protected critical habitat on U.S. nesting beaches and migration routes. "Loggerheads will disappear from the Pacific without greater protections from capture in fisheries," says Todd Steiner, executive director of Turtle Island Restoration Network and the Sea Turtle Restoration Project. "Action is more urgent than ever with the recent expansion of the Hawaiian and Gulf longline fleets and their increased loggerhead captures." There are THREE ways you can take action now to help global populations of loggerhead sea turtles. 1) Click here to quickly send a letter in support of the endangered listing for loggerhead sea turtles. 2) Click here to visit Regulations.gov, the Federal Comments portal, then write your own letter of paste in the sample letter below into their form. 3) Donate to the Sea Turtle Restoration Project, every contribution makes a difference. With your actions and contributions, the Sea Turtle Restoration Project will build a tidal wave of strong support for the proposal to list U.S. loggerheads as endangered species, designate strong critical habitat on nesting beaches and ocean migration corridors, and establish strong ocean policies that provide endangered sea turtles the protections they need to recover their population. Sincerely, Chris Pincetich, Ph.D. Campaigner & Marine Biologist Sample letter to upload into Regulations.gov Dear Sea Turtle Coordinator, Loggerhead sea turtles across the globe struggle to survive against the constant threats from commercial fisheries, poachers, and ocean pollution. I strongly support the change in ESA listing from threatened to endangered status for loggerhead sea turtles, especially the U.S. populations in the North Pacific and Northwest Atlantic. Commercial longline fishing operations in Hawaii and the Gulf of Mexico capture hundreds of these endangered sea turtles each year, a practice that must come to an end if loggerhead population recovery plans are to be successful. Marine debris, plastic pollution, and water poor quality continue to degrade loggerhead habitat and the ability of their populations to recover from their slide to extinction. Strong critical habitat protections for all loggerhead sea turtles are needed immediately. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my strong support of the endangered listings proposed for loggerhead sea turtles and my support for greater sea turtle protections through the designation of strong critical habitat in the near future.
