Take Action: Lionfish Expedition in the Mexican Caribbean

Our friends at Abyss Dive Center have a project for you to get involved in and they offer discounts on our directory as well! What is the problem? In 1993 there was an unfortunate release of lionfish from a US Aquarium in Florida. Lionfish, who are indigenous to the are have been found in the Caribbean from Florida to Venezuela. There are no natural predators in the area and teh Caribbean reef fish are not familiar with the functioning of the lionfish. Basically, lionfish eat every single fish they see to survive. In Indonesia, the other reef fish know to stay away from the lionfish to protect their existence, however in the Caribbean the reef fish do not know to do this.  Little by little the lion fish will endanger the population of the reef fish in the Caribbean. What can you do to help? Starting the month of May, we will be holding lionfish expeditions each week through at least the end of November 2010 in an attempt to safely capture the lionfish and return them to other environments where they can co-habitat  with other fish and not endanger populations. We need divers to continue the rescue efforts and find the lionfish!

How do we help you do it? We have a week long educational and conservation program through the dive center to encourage the safe capture of these species and find them a new home.  All you have to  do is dive, each day on the reefs of the Mexican Caribbean with our trained instructors and you will get a great deal to do so!
